My guess is that if you’re reading this, you probably haven’t spent too much of your time this past week crawling on your knees. Unless you have a little one crawling around the house, once we start walking…we stop crawling. My beautiful granddaughter London has now figured out the magic of moving on two feet, and let’s face it…why crawl anymore? She’s also becoming pretty proficient at the “quasirunnishwaddlestep.” A few weeks ago I upgraded my phone and added a feature that measures how many steps I’ve taken each day. This can be a blessing and a curse. The goal, it says, is 10,000 steps. Some days I hit that and some, well, not so much. My average seems to be right around 9,000. One day the app only recorded 804 steps. I’m not sure what I was doing that day, but I hope I had just left my phone at home or something. Then one day recently my phone tracked 24,569 steps. Most of that was up a mountain and into the tundra in Colorado. Then, a week later, 8,456 steps…in the line at Disney World to board “Space Mountain.” One, a great personal goal. The other, a roller coaster ride in Fantasyland. Bottom line, all these steps we’re taking are headed somewhere, but where? Are we taking steps toward God? Toward a growing and deepening relationship with Him? Are any of our steps toward becoming more like Him? More loving? More compassionate? More forgiving? More patient? More honest, authentic, grateful, and holy? Or are we content to just take steps through Fantasyland in the long line up to “Space Mountain?” How many of those steps are toward God. How many are running away? How many were baby steps, and how many were gigantic leaps? Who knows? Well, God knows. In fact, He says, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord.” Psalm 37:23 Job 31:4 says, ” Does He not see my ways and count every step?” Psalm 119:133 says “Order my steps in Thy word and let not iniquity have dominion over me.” Psalm 18:36 reads, “Thou has enlarged my steps under me, that my feet did not slip.” My friends, it doesn’t take a step counter or any gadget to access our spiritual steps today. Let’s just ask the Lord and commit ourselves to the steps (and crawls if necessary) of conversation with Him, thanking Him, trusting Him, listening to Him, and daily surrendering to Him. These small steps make large leaps into the freedom of abundant life in Jesus. Ok, I have to run. I need to catch up to London. I have no idea where she’s going, but she’s teaching me alot every step of the way. There’s no place like HOPE, Stefan
